The Isle of Man lap record belongs to a road bike.
Peter Hickman lapped the 37.73-mile Mountain Course at an average of 136.358 mph on a Superstock M 1000 RR, the racing class built on bikes you can buy. Three TTs later, nobody has gone faster. This is the record of the motorcycle family behind that lap.

BMW built a road bike so it could go racing.
World Superbike only accepts motorcycles that are sold to the public. In 2009 BMW wanted in, and it had never built a supersport motorcycle. So it built one, sold it, and raced it. Everything since has followed the same order: the race team needs something, and the road bike gets it.

The original
The S 1000 RR arrives with 193 hp, and with Race ABS and traction control offered straight from the factory. BMW builds enough in the first year to put it on the World Superbike grid.

The special
When the standard bike stops being enough of a starting point, BMW's M division builds its first motorcycle. The M 1000 RR is road-legal, but it was designed around the racing rulebook.

The payoff
Toprak Razgatlıoğlu wins BMW's first World Superbike riders' title, fifteen years after the first race. He wins it again in 2025. In September 2026 the endurance team adds a world title of its own.

BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team
The endurance title was settled at the Bol d'Or on 20 September 2026, by four points. It is the first world championship a European manufacturer has won in the series, and one of the three riders who won it, Steven Odendaal, is South African.
The next one is already testing.
This generation has been on sale since 2019. Its replacement has been previewed, and photographed.

At the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, BMW showed carbon and aluminium bodywork around an engine derived from the M 1000 RR's racing engine, making more than 230 hp. BMW called it the earliest look it had ever given at a future RR.
